Fully automatic airsoft guns are replica guns of actual automatic weapons. The ammunition used are plastic pellets or BB's and have firing capacities that rival their ‘real' counterparts. They can have firing speeds up to 900 rounds per minute and give the feel of a true automatic rifle when fired. These guns are heavier than non-automatics and are intended for the serious user only.
Fully automatic airsoft guns are called AEG's or Automatic Electric Guns as they use an electric powered firing system for maximum force. The electric system requires a rechargeable battery and operates using piston method of air compression. They were brought to prominence in the 1990's and sparked the boom of airsoft gun sales used for sport. The maintenance of these guns can be more intensive due to the rapid firing rate. BB's can jam, there are more parts that wear over time than either the spring or the gas powered guns, and batteries have a finite life span. This all leads to a higher cost, but for the power most think it's worth it.
Just about all of the long-time users of airsoft guns for sport have an AEG. If you've ever been to a paintball soirée you'll know the value of a good automatic airsoft gun. Once the power is learned to be handled correctly, the ability to spray your opponents with paintball BB's will give you an enormous advantage on the field. Most military personnel use an automatic rifle in actual combat, and once you've tried one of these guns out you'll know why.
